BIG Completes Construction of Confidential Lab and Office
Our client chose a building in Deerfield for their new workspace, a dual-purpose laboratory and office.
Establishing their intake lab on the first floor included the buildout of their own shipping and receiving dock, a necessity for the sensitive nature of their business. Our client designed and maintains the Zio product, a reusable 24-hour heart monitor. While previously someone in need of monitoring would only be able to receive this service while in the hospital, the Zio allows a person to go about their life and be monitored for a full two weeks, providing health care providers with more information.
The intake lab in their new facility is equipped to receive and process over 3,000 heart monitors each day, six days a week. Achieving this sensitive task requires a humidity-controlled environment, static dissipating materials across all surfaces, and significant data for the download and processing of information. The humidity of this lab is monitored by ALC controls tied into the client’s West Coast mainframe. As a health device company handling personal data, the lab is also subject to federal and local inspections. Special attention to detail was required in case of audit by the FDA and Illinois Department of Public Health.
The fourth-floor office space is highly detailed, with multiple ceiling and floor finishes throughout differentiating open office, collaboration, and break spaces. A custom light fixture in the breakroom required 328 mounting points coordinated within a quarter inch.
The BIG team, as part of the project team including HOK and Cushman & Wakefield, was up to the challenge. Just check out this rendering to reality! Senior Superintendent Jorge Toro received kudos from the team, instilling such confidence during the process that they were inspired to make a special tee - "In Jorge We Trust."
